My First Knitting Project

When I was little, my mom tried to teach me to knit. After a few rows, I quickly decided that I wanted no part of it. Now that I'm older, I've realized that there are a few crafts I think I might enjoy, knitting being one of them. I wish I'd paid more attention when I was little, but really, I just wanted to go outside and play.

I have a friend who is very talented when it comes to crafts. She decided she wanted to learn how to tat. She bought a book, sat down, and learned how to effin' tat. Me? I'm not that talented. The visual diagrams in books bring out my violent side, and the written instructions are not written in any English that I understand.

I was browsing the craft section of our local library, saw The Chicks with Sticks Guide to Knitting, and thought, "Why not give knitting a try, maybe it's easier to learn than crochet." Crochet has been pissing me off for over a year.

So, I checked it out. The first project was a simple scarf using the garter stitch (you knit every row -- kinda boring, but the practice was worth it) with two different yarns. It was a good project to start on, but I admit, I had to look up videos on YouTube to figure out how to cast on. At first, my tension was way too tight, and I couldn't figure out how to comfortably hold the yarn. By the end of the scarf, my tension had loosened, and knitting felt much more natural and even speedy. I also thought that there was no way I'd be able to knit with two different yarns, but it was easy. After two days I finished the project and had a new scarf that I like.

for an easy to wash, comfortable, and warm scarf.

Someone else had a hold on the book, so I had to return it, but I think I'll buy a copy for myself. The projects seem simple enough for me. I get frustrated very easily, but with this project, I didn't throw sharp knitting needles across the room even once.
